John David Washington has earned his bones as an accomplished actor in his own right, stemming from Hollywood icons Denzel and Pauletta Washington. Unfortunately, with the worldwide stature his father boasts given his blockbuster status and Oscar-winning past, his mother’s equally commendable achievements often go unnoticed, prompting many to refer to him as just “Denzel Washington’s son.” Determined for that to never happen again, the Ballers actor politely stopped a journalist in his tracks to educate him on his mother’s lengthy résumé and background as a veteran of the arts. While doing promo for his current film, BlacKkKlansman, John was gearing up to answer a question that was beginning to be phrased in a way he didn’t quite favor.
As the interviewer started, “Being the son of Denzel Washington…,” John quickly interjected and reminded him that his mother is worthy of just as much praise as his widely celebrated father is.
“…And Pauletta Washington,” he interrupted. “Who was earning more money than he was when they married, [and] before they got married. She was on Broadway. She paid for the first date. She paid the bill, paid the cab ride… A classically trained pianist, went to Juilliard. She’s a great artist in her own right and I learned a lot from her.”
He ended his eloquent defense of his accomplished mother with these words: “My father taught me how to hunt. My mother taught me how to love.”
